Bone Broth: What You Need to Know

 In Nutrition

Introduction

Bone broth, also known as stock, is a liquid made from boiled animal bones and connective tissue. This tasty concoction can be used as a based for soups, sauces, and gravies, and can also be consumed on its own. Additionally, it has many health benefits.

Benefits of Bone Broth

Detox from the weekend and improve your gut health with bone broth. I love it because it’s so beneficial to your physical and mental health.

Benefits of bone broth include:

  • Strengthening your immune system
  • Increasing gut health
  • Improving joint health
  • Promoting healthier and radiant skin
  • Keeping your immune system strong and your spirits up (as in keeping your mood up, not referring to alcohol)

Bone broth is nutrient-rich with bioavailable nutrients such as:

  • Iron
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin K
  • Essential amino acids
  • Selenium
  • Zinc
  • Manganese

Bioavailable means that the nutrients can actually be absorbed by the body. Unfortunately, a lot of fruit and vegetables may have nutrients, but the human digestive system cannot absorb a significant amount of them. Advertisers don’t tell you that!

Bone broth also contains glycine and manganese, both of which calm the nervous system and help you fall and stay asleep. Also, because we have almost as many neurotransmitters in the gut as we do in the brain, the health of our gut directly affects our mental health.

The gut bacteria produce and respond to the neurochemicals such as:

  • Acetylcholine
  • Dopamine
  • GABA
  • Norepinephrine
  • Melatonin
  • Serotonin

These are the same neurochemicals the brain uses to regulate mood and cognition.

Because of its high collagen content, bone broth is also wonderful for skin, hair, nails, and joint health.

Where to Get Bone Broth

A purple and pink background with some blackI love bone broth! When I don’t have time to make it myself, I get it at Belcampo because the quality is amazing, then I use it to make my soups, stews, and chili. (UPDATE: Belcampo is now permanently closed. RIP!)

You can also order bone broth online.

How to Use Bone Broth

You can drink stock on its own or use it as a base for soups, sauces, and gravies. I use it to make my soups, stews, and chili.

Check out some of my creations from my Scrumptious Creole Kitchen. I also add nutritional yeast to my soups, stews, and chili because it’s a gluten-free thickener. Additionally, it has amazing health benefits, such as being highly nutrient-dense and boosting your immune system. More recipes coming soon!
